Asthma Athletics Swim Programs have taken place throughout Phoenix and surrounding cities since August 2002. Swim partners have included the YMCA, Banner Childrens Hospital and Swim Kids USA. Both the children and parents are encouraged to participate. The program lasts for 1 month. Each visit begins with a check in, where children learn to use peak flow meters.
An Asthma Lesson follows, which lasts 30-45 minutes. during this lesson children and parents learn an aspect of asthma care. Various asthma topics are addressed and later enforced with games. The swim lessons are lead by qualified swim instructors. As the children are participating in the swim lesson, parents meet with volunteer health care providers who offer asthma education.
In order to get the most out of the program, the parents and child should make sure they are able to attend all 4 sessions of the program. These programs will be held throughout the year.
